CHIRP welcomes FOUND Magazine’s 10th Anniversary Tour to the Old Town School of Folk Music on Friday, November 2nd.
In addition to the magazine reaching the 10-year milestone, the show will celebrate the release of editor and publisher Davy Rothbart’s book of personal essays, My Heart is an Idiot, as well as his brother Peter Rothbart’s new album (You Are What You Dream) and a brand-new issue of FOUND. Along with the latest finds from the mailbox at FOUND HQ, Davy will share stories from his book and his work for public radio’s “This American Life,” while Peter will provide the soundtrack with songs based on FOUND notes.

Today is the 61st birthday for the man with the Space Bass and the star shaped spectacles, Bootsy Collins. Bootsy got his start in the ’60s, backing James Brown with his older brother, but eventually burning out (as many did). He resurfaced as the bass player for Parliament-Funkadelic, eventually leaving to pursue his solo career. Bootsy has been a gigantic influence on funk with his distinctive playing and stylish clothes. Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Peter Tosh Edition
Let’s pay tribute to a reggae pioneer, Peter Tosh. In the early ’60s, Tosh got together with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer to form the Wailing Wailers, a ska group that had some hits. But they splintered when Marley came to the States to live with his grandmother. He returned in 1968, and the band reformed as simply The Wailers, with the members dreaded out, adopting the Rastafarian religion, and slowing down to rock steady tempos. Tosh was a key figure in the band, because he was by far the most accomplished musician, and Wailer says Tosh taught Marley the guitar. Tosh wrote some of The Wailers early hits, but left the fold when Island Records head Chris Blackwell wouldn’t put out his solo album. Eventually, Tosh put out Legalize It and continued putting out quality reggae records until he passed away in the ’80s. CHIRP is proud to welcome The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion to their show at Bottom Lounge on Sunday, October 21. After some well-received reunion shows to promote the recent reissues of their 1990s albums (like Extra Width, Orange and Now I Got Worry), the band recorded new material and have just released their first new album in eight years, Meat and Bone. Spencer and Co. have proved themselves just as raucous and commanding as they were all those years ago with performances like their 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival appearance, so come and find out how the new jams sound and how their classics hold up. Bloodshot Bill opens this 17-and-over show which starts at 9 PM.
